First Term 2018 Newsletter (16/01/2018)

Girls' College Principal, Mrs Ross

Principal, Mrs Ross

Dear Parents/Guardians,

2018!!!! How the time flies, as I am completing my 10th year at Girls' College.  It has been good and many developmental changes have happened and we know that this year there will be more.  I thank you all for your support.

We would like to welcome all our new Form 1's and the numerous new students who have joined us this January. We have also had three new members of staff join us, Mrs C. Duckworth (Sport and Auxiliary), Mrs R. Friend (Art) and Mrs B. Rheam (English).  We wish them all a long and happy association with the College.

We would again like to remind you that in order to be more cost effective with our D6 Communicator we are encouraging parents, who own companies, or work with companies, to advertise through this media. A "banner" can be put at the bottom of a page for a nominal charge, details of which can be discussed through the School Administrator.

Congratulations must go to our three students who wrote the Mandarin HSK Level 2 exam at the University of Zimbabwe who all passed, with one student having an almost perfect score.  Our thanks to Ms Maksimovic for keeping the momentum going and motivating the girls to learn to speak conversational Chinese.

Cambridge November A.S. and A.L. results were out on Wednesday and although these are still being analyzed we are very happy with them.  Our A.L. pass rate is up from last year and our A.S. seems a little lower, but the number of 100% pass rate in subjects is up from 2017, as well as the quality of symbols.  The I.G.C.S.E. results are out on Wednesday when the Lower 6th students are back from their camp.  Details of results will be given at our Academic Assembly on Friday 16th February just prior to our Fixture Free Weekend. At this stage we would like to thank the staff for all the hard work they have put in to achieve these very commendable results.

Please be advised that the closing date for registration for those who wish to write Cambridge May/June exams is 9th February 2018.  Forms can be collected from the front office.

Once again we appeal to parents to support the systems within Girls' College, by trying to build up your daughters confidence, by making them accountable if they have been found wanting, to allow them to express their concerns, to guide them with their making of friends, to control their internet usage by being involved in what they are doing, by encouraging them to abide by the rules of the school and your home and letting them know that your love is unconditional.

We have a very busy term with many events and ask you to please download the calendar which can be found on our webpage (www.girlscollegebulawayo.org).  We invite you to join us for these events.  Your daughters do enjoy parental presence, even though they might not say so!

Wishing you all a happy and prosperous 2018.
